Nominations of Young Heroes Invited for Gloria Barron Prize

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes seeks nominations for its 2010 awards. The Barron Prize honors young people between the ages of 8 and 18 who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet.

Each year, ten national winners each receive $2,500 to support their service work or higher education.

“Each year, the Barron Prize honors twenty-five winners nationwide. Half of the winners have focused on helping their communities and fellow beings; half have focused on protecting the health and sustainability of the environment.

These young people reflect the great diversity of America. They are female and male, urban and rural, and from many backgrounds. Examples are Michaella, who organized a rodeo for disabled kids; Carter, who led the effort to conserve a local river; Ashley, who created a scholarship fund for African girls; Kyle, who organized a reading mentorship program; Joying, who cleaned up South Carolina’s beaches; Ryan, who helped provide clean drinking water to more than 70 African villages; and Barbara, who created a successful oil recycling project in Texas.

The goal of the Barron Prize is to celebrate such heroic young people—and to inspire others to do their part. Like the woman for whom the prize was named—my mother, Gloria Barron—these young people demonstrate the power of one person to make a difference to the world.”

Fashion Business Gives Paid Internships To Homeless Grads

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Corbin Davis graduated from Valley High School and just got a job at Billionaire Mafia, a local fashion business. He went from the streets to a steady paycheck.

He’s not the only one whose luck has changed — thanks to local business owners.

Homeless Teenagers Land Jobs
“I was in shock, disbelief — dumbfounded,” Davis said. “It blew my mind, because I was looking for a job.”

Davis said he was surprised after he got a job offer from fashion designer Lana Fuchs. She said she had seen him on FOX5.

“We have the glitz, glamour, beauty, fashion, but these homeless kids and homeless people are part of Las Vegas,” Fuchs said.

So, Fuchs gave Davis and his friend, Donna Hill, a shot at learning the ropes of the industry. She said she has also made a few calls to get other businesses to offer other homeless teenagers jobs. About a dozen graduates are now earning a paycheck.

“They’re giving me the opportunity to learn how to conduct business, because I’m going to college for business administration — learn accounting, sales,” Davis said.

“I can wake up and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to work today. I’m happy to work,’” Hill said.

NEW YORK – The nation’s newest texting champion has a message for parents across the land — although they might not want to hear it.

After all, she said: “Your kid could win money and publicity and a phone.”

For the Des Moines, Iowa, teenager, her 14,000 texts-per-month habit reaped its own rewards, landing her the competition prize of $50,000 just eight months after she got her first cell phone.
